Status of women teachers in Southern Africa

Abstract: Provides information and statistical data on women primary and secondary school teachers in the South African region in relation to national educational policies and plans, teacher preparation, employment and career development, rights and responsibilities, conditions for effective teaching and teacher salaries. The distribution of women teacher on a country-by-country basis is analyzed together with the representation in senior and administrative posts. It also attempts to identify the specific constrains--socio-cultural, socio- psychological, structural, familial, time and financial--which continue to keep women under-represented in decision-making and power positions in education.
