Abstract:
Examines the role of public sector employment in the labour market of developing countries. Looks at the growth of public sector employment during the sixties and seventies, especially at policies (e. g. nationalization and guaranteed employment programmes) introduced during the immediate post- independence period, and considers the implications of economic recession and structural adjustment on the public sector in the 1980s.
