Abstract: Provides a synthesis of the findings from the WED (Women's Enterprise Development) Study entitled "Job, Gender and Small Enterprises in Africa", carried out in Ethiopia, Tanzania and Zambia in 2002. Identifies ways in which governments, the ILO, donors, NGOs and the private sector can improve the prospects of women's entrepreneurship. Uses the MAIR model to reflect the roles of Motivation and determination, Abilities and skills, Ideas and market, and Resources in starting and developing a successful business.
