Costs and benefits of eliminating child labour in Brazil

Ana Lucia Kassouf and Peter Dorman

ILO Working Papers from International Labour Organization

Abstract: Estimates the economic costs and benefits of eliminating child labour in Brazil. In terms of cost, focuses on the cost of providing a quality education to all children in lieu of work, the cost of programme interventions to alter attitudes and practices and the opportunity cost of eliminating this work (i.e. the value of children's labour). On the benefit side, calculates the economic gains from a better educated and healthier population.
