People's Republic of China—Macao Special Administrative Region: 2026 Article IV Consultation-Press Release; and Staff Report
International Monetary Fund
No 2026/256, IMF Staff Country Reports from International Monetary Fund
Abstract:
Macao SAR's solid growth path continues amid lingering pandemic scarring and global shocks, supported by gaming and tourism. However, domestic demand remains weak, led by subdued consumption and investment, and growth is expected to moderate over the medium term amid slower growth in the Chinese mainland and Hong Kong SAR. While substantial fiscal and external buffers provide resilience, heavy reliance on gaming revenues and rapid population aging underscore the importance of advancing economic diversification.
