Abstract:
The main purpose of this paper is to provide overviews of trends and main features inthe bilateral trade between Brazil and China in recent years. An in-depth look at Brazil?sexternal sales to China between 1996 and 2002 is presented, in order to permit anestimate of the amount of gains and loses in competitiveness experienced by Brazil?sexports to the Chinese market during this period. These gains and loses are analyzedunder many different aspects, such as product categories, productive sectors, technologyintensity, dynamism of China?s imports and the performance of rival countriesregarding Brazil?s exports to the Chinese market.Lost or non-sized opportunities by Brazil in terms of Chinese imports are alsoidentified, specially in relation to those goods which, in spite of the fact that Brazilpossessed comparative advantages in the international market, were either notexported to China during 2001-2002, or had their competitiveness diminished in theChinese market between 1996-1997 and 2001-2002.Finally, this paper analyses the impact of Chinese competition over Brazil?s exportsdirected to the United States, the European Union, Argentina and Japan, as well asother six Asian countries ? South Korea, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Indonesia, thePhilippines and Singapore ?, herein collectively referred to as the Asia-Pacific block.
