Abstract: The 'brasileiro' (that is to say, the Portuguese emigrant returned from Brazil) is a central figure of the social history of 19th-century Portugal. In this paper its image in the literary work of Júlio Dinis (1839-1871) will be examined, using the three characters of 'brasileiro' that have important roles in novels of the Oporto writer. From them, it is possible to characterize three types of 'brasileiro': the rentist , the entrepreneur and the failed 'brasileiro'. An interesting further question — why only the first type was widely recognized — will also be dealt.
