Errata: Impact of Deregulation on the Financial Performance of the Class I Railroads

Tenpao Lee, Tae-Kyun Kim and C. Phillip Baumel

Staff General Research Papers Archive from Iowa State University, Department of Economics

Abstract: This paper was published in the September 1988 issue of this journal. In that paper, data from the railroad firms which emerged with one of the 24 surviving firms were aggregated wit the data from the surviving firm. Unfortunately, data from some merging firms were omitted from the analysis. Thus, the data in Tables 1-4 of the original article contain small errors. The corrected data are presented in the following tables. Generally, the corrected data are only slightly different than those in the published article. One major difference is that the F values for the analysis of variance are more significant for the corrected data. A second major difference is in the profit margin regressions in Table 4. The "t" value for the independent variable "asset turnover" is no longer significant in the dummy variable model but is significant in the error component model. There are no changes in the conclusions.
