Price Impacts Associated with the Closing of Hog Slaughtering Plants

Marvin Hayenga, Ronald Deiter and Cristobal Montoya

ISU General Staff Papers from Iowa State University, Department of Economics

Abstract: The impact of closing hog slaughtering plants is examined by comparing relative prices in affected local market areas with prices in distant markets before and after a plant closed. The results suggest that market arbitrage usually has been quite effective, with either temporary or insignificant price effects in six case studies.
