Abstract: The objective of this paper is to estimate the private demand equation of spanish households, for both secondary and higher education, taking into account the estimated opportunity cost for the household with data from the Household Expenditure Survey. Limited dependent variable models are applied in order to estimate the demand for education. The results show that the socioeconomic status of the family has a comparatively greater impact on expenditure on secondary education than on higher education. El objetivo de este trabajo es estimar una ecuación de demanda de educación de los hogares, tanto de educación secudaria como universitaria. Para ello se utiliza una estimación del coste de oportunidad. Modelos de varible dependiente limitada se aplican a los datos procedentes de la Encuesta de Presupuestos Familiares 1990- 199 1. Los resultados muestran que el estatus socioeconómico de la familia tiene un impacto comparativamente mayor en el gasto de los hogares en la educción secundaria que en la educación universitaria de sus miembros.
