Abstract: This paper questions the empirical evidence of the relationship between inequality and growth on the basis of the estimation of convergence equations. The criticisms are aimed in two directions - at the quality of the data and at the standard estimation procedure. It begins by describing in detail the procedure followed in the elaboration of inequality indices for the Spanish provinces, on the basis of the Household Budget Surveys for the years 1973/74, 1980/81 and 1990/91. This information enables the panel data technique to be applied, confirming the negative effect of inequality on the potential growth of the economy when the variables are expressed in per capita terms. El trabajo cuestiona la evidencia empírica relativa a la relación existente entre desigualdad y crecimiento a partir de la estimación de ecuaciones de convergencia. Las críticas se orientan en dos direcciones, hacia la calidad de los datos y al procedimiento estándar de estimación. Comienza describiendo con detalle el procedimiento seguido en la elaboración de los índices de desigualdad para las provincias españolas, a partir de las Encuestas de Presupuestos Familiares de los años 1973/74, 1980/81 y 1990/91. Esta información permite aplicar la técnica de datos de panel, confirmando el efecto negativo de la desigualdad en el crecimiento potencial de la economía cuando las variables se expresan en términos per capita.
