¿TRABAJAR O ESTUDIAR?: EL CASO DE LOS TRABAJADORES ESPAÑOLES

Abstract: The objective of this paper is to analyse the ways people combine work and education in Spain and the relationship with the flexibilisation process of the labour market. This phenomenon has two faces: either working people are engaged on studies or students are on employment. The study of the profile of the people who study and work simultaneously suggests that in the Spanish case the individuals who combine study and work are closer to the typical ¿full-time¿ worker studying ¿part-time¿. Data from the European Household Panel are used to estimate limited dependent variable models relating the decision to study and work. The sequential decision to combine study and work can be established in both directions: first studying then being on employment or first being on employment then studying. A bivariate probit model corrected by the sample selection bias is used to estimate the probability of being both student and employed. El objetivo fundamental de este trabajo es analizar el fenómeno de la compatibilización de los estudios y la ocupación en España y determinar si éste se puede ligar al proceso de flexibilización del mercado de trabajo español. El análisis del perfil de los individuos que compatibilizan estudio y ocupación nos lleva a pensar que el fenómeno de la compatibilización en España presenta dos caras diferentes. Los análisis realizados parecen indicativos de que la figura del individuo que compatibiliza está más próxima al trabajador a "tiempo completo" que estudia a "tiempo parcial". Utilizando como fuente el Panel de Hogares de la Unión Europea, estimamos una serie de modelos multivariantes, tratando de establecer las relaciones entre las decisiones de estudios y de ocupación. Dado que la decisión secuencial de compatibilizar puede ir del estudio a la ocupación o de la ocupación al estudio, realizamos una estimación de la probabilidad de compatibilizar utilizando un probit bivariante con sesgos de selección, tanto de ser estudiante como ocupado.Palabras clave: ocupación, tiempo parcial, educación.
