Abstract: The value of the roughness of the terrain, which expresses a characteristic related to the roughness or escarpment of a certain territory, has been widely used in various branches of science to mainly explain behavior of fauna and location of flora. In the present work, a method of calculating a roughness index of easy interpretation and integration is ex-posed for the 500,000 km² of the Spanish territory. Next, an analysis of its relationship with altitude is developed, as well as the current and historical distribution of the population at the municipal level, detailing a ranking of the 25 municipalities with the highest roughness in Spain. El valor de la rugosidad del terreno, que expresa una característica relacionada con la fragosidad o escarpadura de un determinado territorio, ha sido muy empleado en diversas ramas de la ciencia para explicar comportamientos de la fauna y ubicación de la flora principalmente. En el presente trabajo se expone un método de cálculo de un índice de rugosidad de fácil interpretación e integración para los 500000 km² del territorio español. A continuación, se desarrolla un análisis sobre su relación con la altitud, así como la distribución actual e histórica de la población a nivel municipal, detallándose un ranking de los 25 municipios de mayor rugosidad en España.
