Watershed development in north-east: problems and opportunities

Abstract: The paper looks at some of the watershed development programs in the north eastern states of India. Given the unique topography, fertile land, abundant water resources, evergreen dense forests, high and dependable rainfall, mega biodiversity and agriculture friendly climate. It has various constraints such as uneven topography, soil erosion, small landholdings and jhuming practice of agriculture or shifting irrigation, which has lead to a number of environmental problems. To address the problems of the region government of India had initiated several watershed development programs to improve people\u2019s livelihoods and abolish the practice of jhum cultivation. Watershed programs have helped in raising income, generating employment and conserving the natural resource base as well as motivating people to abandon jhum practice. Watershed program can greatly help to alleviate poverty by raising farm productivity and generating employment opportunities in marginal and fragile environments. The scope for watershed development is even greater in given the region\u2019s problems and opportunities.
