Abstract: We develop a human-capital accumulation model with endogenous fertility to analyze how households jointly determine demand for private tutoring and fertility. It is well established in the prior literature that there exists a trade-off between educational investment in children and the number of children. In our study as well, when public schooling and private tutoring are substitutes, higher-income households engage in greater investment in private tutoring and exhibit lower fertility, a result consistent with previous findings. However, when public schooling and supplementary education are complements, higher-income households exhibit both greater investment in private tutoring and higher fertility, which stands in contrast to earlier studies.
