Methods for the Economic Evaluation of the SMARTACT-Intervention Programs

Abstract: The SMARTACT project aims at developing and testing the efficacy of individual and context based real-time interventions for promoting normal eating and physical activity using mobile technology. When evaluating the programs from an economic perspective, the main benefit associated with an enhanced healthy lifestyle is the prevention of severe diseases before they arise and, as a consequence, the avoidance of healthcare costs and loss of quality of life associated with these diseases. Since the onset of these diseases can vary from a few weeks to several decades, modelling techniques are required in order to assess the cost-effectiveness of the SMARTACT interventions. The aim of this paper is to describe the methods used for the economic evaluation of the SMARTACT interventions. For the analysis, a Markov model will be informed by intermediate outcome measures from the trial as well as auxiliary information from the existing literature. Cost-effectiveness estimates of the SMARTACT interventions will be described in the form of the incremental cost-effectiveness ratios (ICERs).
