Efforts on Fuel Cell Vehicles Made by Russia and Developed Countries

Fuel cell (FC) technology has provided a breakthrough toward realizing increased thermal efficiency. The United States (US), the European Union (EU), and Japan, which the author will call "the developed countries," have taken the lead in validating fuel cell and hydrogen technologies. Russia, however, is taking a different path. To be more specific, while Russia has developed alkaline fuel cell (AFC) stacks, the developed countries are concentrating on developing Polymer Electrolyte Fuel Cell (PEFC) for FC vehicles with standardized FC technologies. An important technological factor on FC research is R&D (Research and Development) based on market. By companies' technological choice, developed countries have established the standardization. FC innovations in developed countries are roduced by the R&D based on FC markets. The history of Russian LADA ANTEL development represents the research achievement of Russian technological choice, which based on market. Russia has developed FC research by introducing R&D based on market which is the important factor on innovation.
