Abstract:
This paper aims to show how the Tra-patrimoine database can be useful to better understand the building, transmission between generations and repartition of the patrimony in France during the last two centuries. We first make a presentation of the sources and, after a discussion on their constraints, we conclude that the sample can be considered as representative of all the levels of wealth, but for the top of the largest fortunes. The paper describes the ways wealth is geographically dispatched and concentrate as time goes by. It also demonstrates the role of families in transmitting the patrimonial inequalities, a role which depends on chronological periods and levels of fortune.
