Abstract: This study describes the paths followed in the pursuit of a better knowledge about the public who demands houses provided by the public sector, aiming the wider objective of adjusting the public programs and policies to the beneficiarys needs. Initially the context in which this process had its beginning in COHAB-SP Companhia Metropolitana de Habitação de São Paulo is presented. After this it is made a brief description of the development of the registering system used, and some possibilities for the utilization of such information are discussed.
