Abstract:
Health care expenditure per capita and life expectancy vary among prefectures in Japan. Considering health status as the output of health care, gaps in health care expenditures between regions can create gaps in the health status between regions. We examine the impact of health care expenditure per capita on life expectancy using prefectural datasets in Japan over the past 30 years. We clarify that decreasing medical resources indeed reduce health care expenditures and that inpatient health care expenditures have a significant positive impact on longevity. Decreasing health care expenditures could also decrease the health performance in Japan.
