Abstract: The Summer Electronic Benefits Transfer for Children demonstration offered a rigorous test of the impact of providing a monthly benefit of $60 per child eligible for free or reduced-price school meals—using existing electronic benefit transfer (EBT) systems—on food insecurity among children during the summer when school meals are not available. In the second year of operations, when the demonstration was fully implemented in 14 communities, the evaluation found that this approach was feasible and reduced the prevalence of very low food security among children by about one-third.
