The implications of Consumption from Self-produce for Vulnerability to Poverty in Turkey

No 2011-02, Working Papers from Mardin Artuklu Univeristy, Department of Economics
Abstract:
First, I calculate separate poverty lines for urban, self-producing rural and other rural households. Second, I analyze vulnerability to income poverty and food poverty in Turkey and show that while self-producing rural households are as vulnerable to income poverty as other rural households, they are much less vulnerable to food poverty. Policymakers who promote “commercialization” and disregard the positive nutritional role played by self-producing could inadvertently do more harm than good.
