Abstract: This paper follows several recent works which on the one hand put forward the importance and variety of innovation in the service industries, and on the other hand have formalized their major modes of development. First, we elaborate an analytical framework for studying "innovations in services" according to their content, their location" within the organization or the supply of the firm and the type of rupture they introduce. This framework helps us to point out the systemic and dynamic process that characterizes the emergence and the diffusion of service innovations within a firm and the whole sector. Then we examine closely the innovations appeared in the fast growing activity of mobile telecommunication services in France. This leads us to show the specificity of the path of the innovations introduced by each of the three carriers of the sector, and to emphasize the imitation/innovation logic that shapes the dynamics of competition in these kind of service industries
