Abstract:
One of the salient features of the ongoing mutations (deregulation, increasing globalization and radical technological changes) within several important industries lies in the concomitance of two tendencies, apparently opposite : on the one hand, interfirm competition tends to sharpen and globalize ; on the other hand, cooperative relationships and Mergers&Acquisitions deals between rivals tends to develop very quickly and to diversify. As the case of the pharmaceutical industry studied in this paper shows, this apparent paradox is not relevant. It constitutes in fact the logical consequence of the mutations cited above, which are radically re-shaping the structural parameters and the strategic means of rivalry within deregulated and globalized industries. In this new competitive context, rivalry and cooperation are increasingly combined through coalitions and networks, both technological and industrial, involving pharmaceutical groups and biotechnologies companies in a new kind of competitive game around innovation processes and market pre-emption
