Cahiers de recherche from Universite de Montreal, Departement de sciences economiques

Abstract: We Develop a Model of the Demand for Gasoline in West Germany. Explanatory Variables Belong to Seven Principal Classes Prices, Vehicle Availability and Characteristics, Infrastructure Characteristics and Regulation, Weather, Income, Final and Intermediate Economic Activities, and Other. the Mathematical Form of the Demand Function Is Determined by the Data Simultaneously with the Appropriate Autocorrelation and Heteroskedasticity Structures of the Residuals. the Usual Linear and Logarithmic Forms of the Demand Function Are Rejected in Favour of a More General Form. the Long Monthly Time Series From January 1968 Until December 1983 Permit the Use of Two Dozen Explanatory Variables. the Results Are Presented in Elasticity Format for All Variables, Including Dummy Variables, and Are Compared with Other German Results.
