Abstract: This paper explores the social integration of old people in Irish society. It also examines the impact of social and economic policies in encouraging or discouraging integration. The conventional view is that elderly people are well integrated in society and are accorded high levels of participation and protection in economic and social life. The conclusion of this paper is more pessimistic with respect to the role and status of old people in Irish society. For some people, the ageing process may lead to a reduction in the normal freedoms and responsibilities associated with full citizenship.
