Community action for health and well-being

Oecd

No 14, OECD Employment Policy Papers from OECD Publishing

Abstract: Community action is a key driver of improved health and well-being, addressing social, economic, and environmental determinants beyond the scope of traditional healthcare. This policy paper presents a selection of six initiatives from across OECD countries, showcasing how communities, in collaboration with health professionals, public institutions, and civil society, have developed locally driven strategies. The initiatives illustrate the benefits of participatory processes, strategic planning, local networks, and robust evaluation. Despite differing contexts, all examples emphasise meaningful engagement, shared leadership, and a focus on equity and inclusion. The paper concludes with practical lessons to support policy makers, practitioners, and community leaders in introducing or improving community action.
