Quantifying digital innovation for the twin transition: Historical trends, current landscape and links with environmental innovation

Abenezer Zeleke Aklilu, Damien Dussaux and Axel Verrier

No 261, OECD Environment Working Papers from OECD Publishing

Abstract: This paper explores the role of digital technologies for the green transition and the empirical relationships between digital innovation and environmental innovation. It develops new patent-based indicators to measure digital innovation more comprehensively, as well as “twin transition” innovation that is both digital and environmental. The paper also reviews global trends in twin transition innovation and investigates digital innovation as a precursor to environmental innovation.
