Abstract:
This paper presents research on the potential for using cost-effective Nature-based Solutions in the European Union’s Eastern Partnership countries – Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Republic of Moldova, and Ukraine. It provides an overview of Nature-based Solutions implementation in the European Union, challenges around financing them, and implications for their use in Eastern Partnership countries. It concludes that there is strong potential for their deployment, and finance is available, but human and regulatory capacity needs to be built to take full advantage of the opportunities. The report also includes a case study on implementing cost-effective Nature-based Solutions in the Alazani-Iori River Basin in Georgia, before concluding with policy recommendations.
