Some Issues on the Estimation of Technical Efficiency in Fisheries

Antonio Alvarez

No 2001/02, Efficiency Series Papers from University of Oviedo, Department of Economics, Oviedo Efficiency Group (OEG)

Abstract: Although the study of productive efficiency has not been a traditional field of research in fishery economics, some recent papers have started to deal with this important topic. However, the estimation of technical efficiency in this sector has to take into account some factors which stem from the fact that fishing is different from other productive activities in several aspects. In this paper we study the implications of multiple species, how to deal with unmeasured biomass stock, the importance of trip length and the choice of fishing ground.
