Abstract:
Pakistan is a constitutional state located in the strategic South Asian region with the fifth largest population and robust security establishment (nuclear capability). It has endured the multiple phases (sad and pleasing) of less than a 100-year national life. Within 20 years of liberation, it started showing some outstanding results in the areas of economics, defence, diplomacy, etc. At present, the country is witnessing economic hardship with mounting inflation, higher cost of capital, twin deficits (budgetary and trade), and debt burden. This article aims at the identification of the economic and governance issues hindering growth and development with specific policy recommendations. The major problem contributing to underdevelopment (low productivity and reduction in income) is misgovernance leading to corruption, underutilisation of natural resources (freshwater, fertile land, young population), and spending beyond capacity. The country needs focused policies in the area of agriculture, agro-based industries and investment in capacity building of young workforce.
