Abstract: Hiring, tenure and promotion processes are powerful influences in driving innovation in research practices and in furthering adoption of open data and software. This ‘Ten simple rules’ article provides practical steps to update institutional processes to incorporate data and software, and to recognize those outputs on their own merit.
