Abstract: Universities find in social media new ways of communicating and transmitting knowledge. In turn, audiovisual formats are popularized reaching all areas of our lives. As a result of both circumstances, YouTube, the social network par excellence in what concerns the broadcasting of audiovisual contents, becomes a usual instrument within the academic environment. This study describes the situation of the institutional channels that Spanish universities manage in this medium, while analyzing aspects related to the contents that are disseminated through them and with the documentary treatment they receive. Three research techniques were used for its elaboration: the observation, the survey and the evaluation. This has allowed, firstly, to examine the channels set up by the different academic institutions; secondly, to survey their managers and thirdly to develop a metadata evaluation model that has been applied to a sample composed by the most popular videos of different university profiles. The results reveal important differences between universities in terms of their activity in this network, while disclosing common tendencies regarding the use and management of the tool. With regard to the documentary treatment of resources, so important in a scenario saturated with content, various practices are identified that the institutions carry out in the description of the videos, finishing with some proposals aimed at improving them.
