Determinants of the relationship between growth and CO2 emissions: A novel application utilizing bivariate latent growth curve models (BLGM) across European regions

Abstract: This study investigates the key determinants shaping the dynamic relationship between economic growth and CO2 emissions in 220 European NUTS2 regions from 2000 to 2021, using a bivariate latent growth curve model (BLGM). Unlike traditional methods, the BLGM framework addresses a critical gap in modeling latent growth processes, variable interactions, and regional heterogeneity, significantly advancing previous methodologies. The approach integrates determinants of regional economic structures, energy consumption patterns, labor market characteristics, and educational attainment. The results highlight the crucial role of financial structure, spatial centrality, and educated development, offering insights for adaptive and effective regional climate and sustainability strategies and emphasizing the need for coordinated policies that integrate technological innovation, territorial planning, labor market diversification, and sustained investment in education.
