From Xs To Boxes: Toward a More Radical Graphical Metaphor for Progressives

Abstract:
The Edgeworth Box provides progressives with a graphical language that can be used to make a powerful case for radical and efficient redistribution of wealth via taxation and law reform. The box also makes it easy to show that price regulation and antitrust are of much more limited use in redistributing wealth. Progressives should embrace the graphical language of the box and give up partial equilibrium scissors graphs, which provide an incomplete picture of policy options for redistribution of wealth.
