This study decomposes changes in the number of births in Korea between 2000 and 2025 into four factors (the female population, the proportion of married women, marital fertility, and non-marital fertility) and further divides each factor's contribution into two components: a level component, the share attributable to the curve as a whole moving up or down uniformly, and an age-pattern component, the share attributable to relative weights shifting across ages while the overall level remains unchanged. Because this component decomposition is simply a rewriting of the identity defining the number of births, the components sum exactly to the factor contributions. Reference criteria for interpreting the component composition were established through a simulation in which the true value of completed marital fertility is specified in advance. The results show that the marital fertility effect worked to raise the number of births over the long run, but only because the concentration of childbearing into the thirties more than offset a decline in the level of the curve as a whole. Judged by the net effect alone, marital fertility appears to have risen; once the components are separated, it becomes evident that the level in fact declined. In the simulation, when marriage is postponed with no change in completed fertility, the component reflecting the concentration of births into particular ages outweighs the level component, whereas when completed fertility genuinely rises, the level component predominates. By this criterion, the 2005–2012 recovery is consistent with a genuine rise in fertility, whereas the recent rebound of 2023–2025 is closer to a consequence of marriage postponement. This study provides criteria for determining the nature of the recent rebound.
