Sexting, War and Expenses: Ministerial Resignations 1997-2019

No w6q2g, Thesis Commons from Center for Open Science

Abstract: This dissertation analyses ministerial resignations from the United Kingdom Government from May 1997 to July 2019. Building upon Dowding and Kang, 1998, this dissertation extends the temporal range of analysis of ministerial resignations using a mixed methods approach to collect and analyse data related to ministerial resignations. This dissertation shows that trends identified by Dowding and Kang, 1998, such as the increasing number of resignations under Prime ministers, and the importance of policy for Labour ministers, continue to 2019. This dissertation concludes that analysis of Ministerial resignations are important for demonstrating the operation of ministerial accountability and that future research should further extend the date range analysed to include the Premiership of Boris Johnson and should include non-resignation in its data collection and analysis.
