Abstract:
This paper tries to emphasize the importance of the inflow of foreign capitals for the performance of the Peruvian economy during the 1990-1998 period. In fact, it is argued that both the expansion of the level of activity and the defeat of inflation were made possible by the big inflow of capitals during this period. It is also emphasized that such inflow of capitals cannot be explained only by domestic factors –such as the program of economic reforms–, but that it was part of a global phenomenon concerning most developing nations, resulting from a big boom in international financial markets. Anyway, the role of economic reforms in attracting foreign investment is recognized, especially through the privatization program, as is the fact that the economic sectors that attract foreign investors are not precisely the most competitive ones.
