Abstract: This is an introductory chapter to the theory of economic growth. It starts analyzing the objet of the growth theory and the distinction between long term growth and fluctuations. The chapter includes data about Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and GDP per capita for different countries from a comparative perspective, relating such an evolution to the economic policies undertaken in those countries. Some useful mathematic tools to facilitate the understanding of the different growth approaches are developed too. Basic notions, as production function, growth accounting and others concepts related to growth theory, are specified. Moreover, this chapter includes present a brief summary of the history of the economic growth theories highlighting the subjects of theoretical concern in different moments of the capitalism development. Finally the chapter ends with an analysis of some stylized facts of economic growth.
