Abstract: Abstract. Telecommunication infrastructure development and economic growth in WAEMU countries: a causality panel analysis from a VECM This article examines the links between telecommunication infrastructure development and economic growth. The study covers WAEMU countries over the period 2000-2016. To avoid problems of multicollinearity, in addition to considering three indicators separately, we construct a composite index obtained from a principal component analysis (PCA) to measure telecommunication infrastructures. We use the autoregressive vector error correction (VECM) model to detect Granger causality. We find a long-term causal relationship between these variables and a unidirectional causality between the development of telecommunications infrastructure and short-term economic growth. From our results, we can conclude that with a large margin of potential growth in telecommunications infrastructure, WAEMU governments should strongly encourage policies to expand access and reduce costs, particularly in regards to the internet and mobile phone services.
