Critique of the value-theoretical basis of the neo-Ricardian model

Abstract:
This contribution to the conference "Nach der Wertdiskussion?" of the Political Economy Research Group of the Philipps University of Marburg, which took place on 27 and 28 June 1998, analyses the "core" of the neo-Ricardian model, i.e. the mathematical approach underlying the determination of prices in Piero Sraffa's book "Warenproduktion mittels Waren". On the basis of a comparison with a mathematical modelling close to the text of Sraffa's economic theory in "Capital. First Volume", which was developed and published by the author in the 1980s, it is shown that Sraffa's model does not provide genuine Marxian values even in the case of a vanishing profit rate. In this respect, the claim of the neo-Ricardian school to have inherited Marx fails above all because it does not take heterogeneous labour into account.
