MPRA Paper from University Library of Munich, Germany

Abstract: Through a large-scale representative survey of farm managers, the main types of contractual and other forms of governance applied by Bulgarian farms in the supply of the necessary land and water for irrigation, labor, services, short-term and long-term assets and innovations, finance, in risk minimization, in the marketing of produce and services, and in the provision of ecosystem services have been identified. An analysis of the dominant management and contractual forms, factors, costs, and efficiency of land and irrigation water supply in Bulgarian farms and farms of different legal types, sizes, product specialization, and ecological and geographical locations has been made. A comparative analysis of the institutional modernization in the supply and management of agricultural lands in the period before the country acceded to the EU and the current stage of development has been made, revealing the factors that most stimulate and limit the development of farms. The quarter-century evolution of institutions and contracts for the supply of land, labor, short-term and long-term tangible assets, services, and sales of production for the sector as a whole and in five main sub-sectors (cereals, vegetables, fruits and grapes, animals and meat, and milk) has been analyzed. Based on statistical, survey, etc. information and various methods different types of contracts used in the Bulgarian agri-food sector have been identified, analyzed, and evaluated.
