MPRA Paper from University Library of Munich, Germany

Abstract: Within the context of El Salvador's recent tourism boom, this study examines the transmission mechanisms through which tourism contributes to economic growth, contrasting the Tourism-Led Growth Hypothesis (TLGH) with the sector's structural evolution. Using a homogeneous series of domestic Input-Output tables (IOT) for 2005, 2014 and 2024, productive linkages, output, employment and income multipliers, and the sector's foreign exchange retention capacity are identified. The results identify a "V-shaped" recovery in domestic content, raising the Domestic Value Added (DVA) embodied in tourism exports to 80.5% in 2024. Linkage analysis confirms that the sector operates as a key backward-linkage driver, with output and income multipliers above the sectoral average. The recent weakening of total multipliers is largely explained by the decline in their indirect component, suggesting a reduction in traction over local suppliers.
