Concentration, convergence and regional inequality in Spain

Abstract: El trabajo revisa la experiencia de crecimiento de las regiones españolas durante el periodo 1955-2000, ampliando los resultados ya conocidos en tres direcciones. En primer lugar, describe los perfiles de la localización de la actividad sobre el territorio, constatandoel freno a la concentración que se produjo desde finales de los años setenta. En segundo lugar, cuestiona el objetivo de convergencia en rentas per cápita cuandoésta se produce como consecuencia de la pérdida de población de los territorios. Por último, analiza la evolución de la desigualdad en la distribución personal de la renta tanto en el tiempo como entre regiones. El principal mensaje es que el crecimiento con cohesión territorial y social es más importante que la convergencia en rentas per cápita. The article reviews the growth experienced by the Spanish regions over the period 1955-2000, enlarging upon already known results inthree directions. First of all, it describes the profiles of the geographical localisation of activity, confirming the curb on concentration that has taken effect since the end of the seventies. Secondly, it questions the aim of per capita income convergence when this takes place as a result of the loss of local population. Lastly, it analyses how inequality in the distribution of personal income has developed both in time and between regions. The main message is that growth accompanied by geographical and social cohesion is more important than per capita income convergence.
