Abstract:
The structural transformations produced in Argentina since the second half of the 70s,which were brought to the extreme during the 90s, generated a process of impoverishment and an increase of the social inequalities that were not uniformly among the different regions. The background conditions behind the collapse of the Convertibility model in 2001, which was characterized by negative records in a variety of economical indicators. Using data from the period 1974-2004 I have analyzed the evolution of the poverty in Argentina, by means of using different indicators and measurement techniques. My final aim was to investigate its profile and possible origins. I found out that the conventional hypothesis stating that the economic growth is essential to reduce poverty is only showing one part of the problem. In conclusion, I highlight the importance of the equitable distribution of the resources in producing the "spillover effect".
