Literacy Profile of Ontario’s Youth

Constantine Kapsalis

MPRA Paper from University Library of Munich, Germany

Abstract: This study develops a literacy profile of Ontario's youth (ages 17 to 25) using data from the International Adult Literacy Survey. The analysis concentrates on Canadian-born youth only. Because of sample limitations, it was not possible to explore the literacy skills of foreign-born youth. IALS classifies respondents into 5 levels of literacy, across 3 literacy domains: document, prose, and quantitative literacy. Most researchers consider level 3 as the minimum necessary literacy level. Individuals scoring at the lowest two levels may be expected to face significant literacy barriers at the workplace and in everyday life.
