Competitiveness of Nations: Theoretical basis in the nineteenth century economic policy

Abstract: The concept of competitiveness is a term widely discussed when defining a range of policy issues. While this concept derives from a more modern interpretation of the process of economic development, general guidelines for achieving the development of an economy already in theoretical guidelines implemented in the nineteenth century by various countries. This paper reviews some concepts from two clear lines: a universalistic view from British authors and particularized vision coming from German, American and Japanese economists.
