Abstract:
This study analyzes the effects of 2001 economic crisis on the crop production performance of Turkish agriculture. Malmquist indices estimated from 1996-2006 provincial level data were employed in the analysis and this period was divided into two (before and after crisis) sub periods to facilitate analysis. Findings show a decline in total factor productivity during the whole period. However, while before crisis sub-period is characterized with an increasing technical efficiency and a decreasing technological change, after crisis sub-period is characterized with just an opposite trend. Average annual total factor productivity decline is around 1% during the whole period.
