Abstract:
The purpose of this paper is to analyze the effect of remittances on Latin America`s economic growth thorough 1976-2007 controlling the potential endogeneity of the regressors through system GMM estimators for dynamic data panel model. The main conclusion is that remittances had a negative and significant effect on the region, although with low magnitude. The countries most negatively affected by remittances were Mexico, Haiti, Costa Rica and Nicaragua, while Panama, the country that led the inflow of remittances to the 1980's, was the only country with a positive impact.
