Abstract:
This paper deals with the effects of migrants remittances on poverty in Senegal. Data were extracted from the Senegalese Households’ survey (ESAMII) for that purpose. Empirical findings based on a microeconomic analysis show that remittances improve significantly households’ per capita expenditures. However, the area and quintiles sub-sampling reveals some discrepancies among households. Per capita expenditures are more responsive to remittances in urban areas with respect to rural ones. The results also indicate that richer households are more affected by remittances. The poverty headcount and poverty gap are reduced in presence of remittance while the severity of poverty is worsened.
